Inside the Courthouse

Get a sneak peek at courtroom drama and gain a better understanding of your civic rights and responsibilities. In this course, you’ll learn the ins and outs of the legal process and experience who's who at trials and how trials work. You’ll have opportunities to play a lawyer or a witness and hone life skills such as listening, speaking, reading and reasoning. Throughout the course you’ll work as part of a team, and on the last day of class you’ll compete in a mock trial.

What You'll Learn

  • Skills used by legal professionals, including leadership, teamwork, active listening, critical thinking and persuasive speaking
  • How to write, read and analyze basic legal documents
  • Court procedures and the inner workings of our judicial system

Who Should Register

This course is for incoming sixth to eighth graders.

This in-person course is taught on the UW Seattle campus

Students who want a full-day experience can register for two courses — one in the morning and one in the afternoon — which will include a supervised lunch break between courses. Students should bring a lunch.
